I<\/span>n an exclusive interview with The Hindu\u2019s <\/em>Nistula Hebbar, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said that the NDA has provided a strong, stable government for the last 10 years and that the government will be voted back due to its record. \u201cIn 2014, the voter wanted to replace the UPA and bring us. In 2024, we are being voted back on our record, and I feel this is for the first time that a government in India will get a positively affirmative vote based on hope,\u201d he said.\u00a0

Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi filed his nomination<\/a> from the Varanasi Lok Sabha seat<\/a>. He is seeking a third term from the constituency. Several NDA leaders, including Union ministers and chief ministers, came to support the prime minister. He will face off against the Congress\u2019 Uttar Pradesh state chief Ajay Rai.\u00a0

The Congress questioned Mr. Modi\u2019s record in Varanasi, saying that he abandoned the villages he adopted. Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh also claimed that the Ganga has gotten dirtier<\/a> even though the Centre spent \u20b920,000 crore to rejuvenate the mighty river.
The party announced it will organise several meetings in New Delhi as part of its outreach before the city goes to polls on May 25. Rahul Gandhi will address one of these meetings.
In an election rally in Haryana, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said that the BJP is losing ground across the country and will not win more than 230 seats.\u00a0
Members of The Trinamool Congress asked the Election Commission to stop \u201cblatant violations\u201d of the poll code by the BJP and its leaders. After submitting a letter over the matter to the poll panel, the TMC\u2019s Rajya Sabha MPs Saket Gokhale and Sagarika Ghose expressed dismay over the ECI\u2019s \u201cinaction\u201d<\/a>.
Meanwhile, the Supreme Court refused to entertain a plea seeking to bar PM Modi from elections<\/a> for allegedly making hate speeches and violating the Model Code of Conduct during campaigning. A Bench of Justices Vikram Nath and S.C. Sharma asked the petitioner to approach the authorities concerned for the redressal of the grievance. \u201cHave you approached authorities. For writ of mandamus you must approach the authorities first,\u201d the Bench said.

Among all parties, the BJP has submitted the highest number of advertisements related to the Lok Sabha polls for approval, sources at the office of the Delhi Chief Electoral Officer said.
To seek approval for about 2,084 political advertisements in the city, the BJP submitted nearly 517 applications to the poll body from March 13 till May 8, data accessed by PTI <\/em>showed. The Congress <\/u>has put 118 applications for 349 political advertisements. The Aam Aadmi Party submitted six applications for an equal number of advertisements related to the Lok Sabha elections. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has claimed that the BJP is losing ground across the country and will not win more than 230 seats. Mr. Kejriwal, while addressing an audience in a roadshow for party candidate Sushil Gupta in Pehowa, Haryana, said, \u201cOn March 16, elections were announced. On March 21, they sent me to jail. This means they did not want Kejriwal to campaign. They are scared of Kejriwal.\u201d
\u201cIn the entire country, the situation is turning against them. BJP is losing badly \u2026 In Haryana, Rajasthan they are losing; in Maharashtra, Karnataka, Jharkhand, Bihar, UP, West Bengal, Delhi, and Punjab, their seats are coming down. Nowhere there is an increase in their seats,\u201d he said.\u201dThey claim they will win 400 seats. Today I can tell you in writing that they are not winning more than 230 seats,\u201d Mr. Kejriwal said. Modi is a liar and I am saying it again and again that Modi is the chief of liars (\u2018jhoothon ka sardar\u2019),\u201d he said. \u201cIf this man [Modi] comes again [as PM], there will be no elections. Activist Manoj Jarange has warned that the Maratha quota agitation will be restarted from June 4, when the results of the ongoing Lok Sabha elections will be out. A rally will be organised on June 8 to press the Maratha community\u2019s demand for reservations in government jobs and admissions to educational institutes, he said.

In a bid to encourage voting, some restaurants in Mumbai have announced that they will give a discount of 20% on the total dine-in bill value on May 20 and 21.\u00a0
The \u2018Democracy Discount\u2019 initiative is the hospitality fraternity\u2019s way of encouraging citizens to go out and cast their votes, the National Restaurant Association of India (NRAI) Mumbai Chapter said in a statement. All participating restaurants will provide the discount to dine-in customers who are residents as per their voter ID and have cast their vote.

The Election Commission of India has disposed of 90% of 425 complaints it received in the last two months and no major complaints were pending from parties, except the Congress and BJP.
It has expressed satisfaction with the overall conduct of the campaign during this period, saying that the campaigning has been \u201cviolence-free, less noisy, less cluttered and intrusive, and free of inducement and ostentatiousness.\u201d\u00a0
This is the Commission\u2019s second report on enforcing the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) during the 2024 general elections. The first report was released on April 16, 2024.
\u201cApproximately 425 major complaints, excluding canvassing-related or clarificatory complaints, have been filed by various political parties and candidates at the level of ECI and CEOs. Of these, action has been taken (or matter disposed) in 400 cases,\u201d the ECI said in its report. \u201cApproximately 170, 95, and 160 complaints were filed by Congress, BJP and others, respectively. Most of these complaints have been acted upon,\u201d it said.
It said that 4,22,432 complaints were filed on the C-Vigil App as of May 14, 2024. Of these, action has been taken in 4,22,079 (99.9%) cases, and of these, 88.7% of complaints were resolved in an average time of less than 100 minutes.- ANI
Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati has said that her party will carve a separate State of Bundelkhand if voted to power. Addressing an election rally in Jhansi, Ms. Mayawati said, \u201cThere have been demands for carving a separate Bundelkhand state. If our government is formed (at the Centre), then we will take positive steps in this regard. Bundelkhand will definitely be made a separate state.\u201d Bundelkhand is a hilly region spread across 13 districts in southwest Uttar Pradesh and northern Madhya Pradesh. Seven districts in Uttar Pradesh (Banda, Mahoba, Hamirpur, Lalitpur, Jhansi, Jalaun, and Chitrakoot) and eight districts in Madhya Pradesh (Datia, Tikamgarh, Chhattarpur, Sagar, Damoh, and Panna) come in this region.
The BSP chief also claimed that it \u201cwould not be easy\u201d for the current BJP-led NDA to return to power, provided \u201cthe elections are free and fair,\u201d and the EVMs are not tampered with. She also alleged that the BJP has \u201cpoliticised\u201d all central agencies under it, just as its predecessor, Congress, had done.
Jhansi will vote in the fifth phase of the Lok Sabha polls in the state on May 20. The BSP has fielded Ravi Prakash from the constituency.The BJP has fielded Anurag Sharma, its sitting Lok Sabha MP, while the Congress has given ticket to former Union minister Pradeep Jain \u2018Aditya\u2019. – PTI
Senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh has claimed that there is no \u2018lehar\u2019 [wave] in favour of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, but only \u2018zehar\u2019 [poison] in his language.\u00a0
While addressing a press conference in Bhubaneswar, Mr. Ramesh said that the language of the \u201coutgoing\u201d prime minister indicates he is \u201ctensed and confused\u201d. \u201cHe (PM) has realised that farmers, youth, labourers, women and backward classes are upset with him. That\u2019s why he talks about Hindu-Muslim, Muslim League, black money given to Congress in tempos and \u2018mangalsutra\u2019.
\u201cThere is no \u2018lehar\u2019 (wave) on the ground in favour of the PM but only \u2018zehar\u2019 (poison) in his language. This indicates that time has arrived for a change,\u201d he claimed. Reacting to the voter turnout in the Monday polling at the Srinagar Lok Sabha constituency, while DPAP chief Ghulam Nabi Azad remarked that the figures are not high enough to know whether the people are happy or angry with the abrogation of Article 370 and bifurcation of Jammu and Kashmir into two union territories, PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti said it is a message that the people have not accepted the Centre\u2019s decisions.
Democratic Progressive Azad Party (DPAP) president Mr. Azad on Tuesday said, \u201cI had hoped that Kashmir will witness 80 to 90% turnout in view of what has been happening in the past seven to eight years. Article 370 was removed, statehood was snatched. So I thought the turnout will be high, like 90 to 95%.
\u201cThe increase of a few percent hardly matters as it happens in every constituency of India. That way, we can not know whether the people are angry or happy (with the abrogation of Article 370 and snatching of statehood). Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on May 14 held a roadshow in Kurukshetra\u2019s Pehowa campaigning for party candidate Sushil Gupta and attacked the BJP-led Centre over his jailing, claiming it is scared of him.
Addressing a gathering, Mr. Kejriwal said, \u201cOn March 16, elections were announced. On March 21, they sent me to jail. This means they wanted Kejriwal to not campaign. They are scared of Kejriwal.\u201d
He told the crowds in Pehowa, \u201cI have relations in Pehowa. You will ask how. In-laws of my younger brother and Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann come from Pehowa.\u201d \u201cHis (Mann\u2019s) father-in-law Inderjeet Singh is with us today \u2026 From here, not even a single vote should go to BJP, which sent me to jail,\u201d he said.

In a bid to address concerns of the Matuas over citizenship, Union Home Minister Amit Shah on May 14 assured the community that its members would get citizenship under the CAA and accused West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of spreading canards about it.
Addressing a rally at Matua community stronghold Bongaon, Mr. Shah said, \u201cMamata Banerjee can never stop the implementation of the Citizenship Amendment Act in Bengal as it is a law by the central government.\u201d
\u201cNo power in the world can stop my refugee brothers from becoming citizens of India. This is the promise of Modi Ji. Mamata Banerjee must remember that citizenship falls under the exclusive authority of the Central government, not the State governments,\u201d he said.

Coming out with its second report on the enforcement of the Model Code of Conduct since the March 16 announcement of the Lok Sabha election, the poll panel said it has disposed of over 90% of complaints and no major complaint from parties was pending, except some by the Congress and the BJP.

\u201cThe outgoing PM has repeatedly promised to build a medical college in Koderma, but the project is yet to materialise. The college was to be built on 70 acres of land and had 100 MBBS seats. The Prime Minister laid its foundation stone six years ago in 2018 and promised to complete the project again in 2019. Does the Prime Minister ever intend to fulfil his promise or is this another \u2018Modi ki Fake Guarantee\u2019 from the Bharatiya Jumla Party?,\u201d said Mr. Ramesh on X.
