{"id":8340,"date":"2024-05-20T05:51:47","date_gmt":"2024-05-20T05:51:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/samvadbharatnews.com\/?p=8340"},"modified":"2024-05-20T05:51:47","modified_gmt":"2024-05-20T05:51:47","slug":"srinagar-voter-turnout-nc-pdp-term-healthy-srinagar-poll-percentage-expression-against-centres-aug-5-moves-the-hindu","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/samvadbharatnews.com\/?p=8340","title":{"rendered":"Srinagar Voter Turnout: NC, PDP term healthy Srinagar poll percentage \u2018expression against Centre\u2019s Aug. 5 moves\u2019 &#8211; The Hindu"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>To enjoy additional benefits<br \/>CONNECT WITH US<br \/>Updated <span> &#8211; May 14, 2024 10:17 pm IST<\/span><br \/> Published <span>&#8211; May 14, 2024 05:12 pm IST &#8211; Srinagar<\/span><br \/> Voters queue up to cast their ballots at a polling station in Srinagar during the fourth phase of voting in the Lok Sabha election on May 13, 2024. | Photo Credit: NISSAR AHMAD <br \/>J&amp;K\u2019s regional parties, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and National Conference (NC), on Tuesday, said the second highest voter turnout of 38% since 1989 in the Srinagar Lok Sabha seat on May 13 was people\u2019s expression \u201cagainst the Centre\u2019s moves of August 5, 2019\u201d.<br \/>PDP president and former J&amp;K Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti described the healthy voting pattern as \u201cpeople\u2019s way to convey a message to the Centre on the decisions of August 5, 2019\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0\u201cThe decisions of the Center were not accepted\u00a0by the people\u00a0of Kashmir,\u201d she said.<br \/>She urged voters \u201cto vote en masse in the remaining two phases of Parliamentary elections in Kashmir\u201d. \u201cEach vote cast for the PDP would be a clear message against the arbitrary and unconstitutional decisions made on August 5, 2019, and a demand for their reversal,\u201d Ms. Mufti said.<br \/>She alleged that the BJP-led dispensation and its henchmen in Kashmir \u201cwere trying hard to make people stay away from polling\u201d. \u201cThey are well aware the votes would go to the PDP alone,\u201d she said.<br \/>Tanvir Sadiq, political adviser of National Conference Vice President Omar Abdullah, said the turnout was \u201cencouraging\u201d. \u201cIt could have been higher had there been no deliberate attempts to slow down voting on flimsy grounds,\u201d he said.<br \/>Mr. Sadiq said the attempt by the BJP to attribute\u00a0it to their actions of\u00a0August 5, 2019 was \u201ca misrepresentation\u201d.<br \/>\u201cWhy didn\u2019t they (the BJP) field candidates in the three Kashmir Valley seats? If they\u2019re taking credit for the turnout, shouldn\u2019t they have competed to substantiate their assertion? Actually, this turnout contradicts their argument. It signifies a decision contrary to what they profess.\u00a0People are recognising the importance of voting. It indicated\u00a0a growing awareness of Parliamentary elections, typically characterised by low participation, which could result in increased turnout in the forthcoming Assembly election,\u201d Mr. Sadiq said.<br \/>Referring to the turnout in Srinagar, Democratic Progressive Azad Party (DPAP) president Ghulam Nabi Azad said, \u201cI was expecting 80 to 90% polling in Srinagar but it was just an average polling. It didn\u2019t reflect either people being happy or angry with the abrogation of Article 370,\u201d he said.<br \/>Emphasising the need to \u201csteer clear of misleading rhetoric\u201d, Mr. Azad said, \u201cThere is a need for informed voting.
