The residents of a village situated in Kapu assembly segment within Udupi-Chikkamagaluru Lok Sabha constituency have opted for a boycott of the upcoming Lok Sabha election. The decision to protest comes from their dissatisfaction with alleged inadequate civic facilities in their area. The residents of Kattingeri, a subdivision of Moodubelle Gram Panchayat, have collectively decided to abstain from participating in any upcoming electoral events, including the Lok Sabha polls, until their grievances are addressed.
Expressing their grievances, residents of Kattingeri listed the village’s inadequate infrastructure, including the absence of essential amenities such as roads, bridges, and reliable public transportation links. Despite previous engagements with authorities, including visits from deputy commissioners, the villagers lamented the lack of tangible progress in addressing these issues.
Former President of Belle Gram Panchayat, Shivaji S Suvarna, emphasised the substantial voter base in Kattingeri estimating around a thousand eligible voters who have actively participated in past elections.
Nevertheless, the lack of fundamental infrastructure, notably roads and bridges, has persisted as a prominent concern, hindering access to essential services for the past six years, he said.
Former Taluk Panchayat President Devdas Hebbar highlighted the villagers’ unwavering determination, citing previous instances when boycotts were lifted after assurances from elected representatives.
During the meeting, however, the villagers reportedly stood firm against external pressures and inducements, reaffirming their commitment to their decisions.
