Jharkhand will be holding both the Lok Sabha elections and state Assembly polls in 2024 — with a seemingly unequal two-way fight between Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), which is part of the I.N.D.I.A. bloc.
According to a recent opinion poll conducted by News18, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is expected to secure Lok Sabha 12 seats, while I.N.D.I.A. is likely to secure two.
The poll has predicted a vote share of 58% for the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance, 32% for the I.N.D.I.A. bloc and 10% for other parties in the fray.
Jharkhand has 14 seats out of a total of 543 Lok Sabha constituencies for which elections will be held in the summer. The battle for the 81 Assembly seats will be held in October-November.
The state has seen a political churn after JMM Executive President Hemant Soren was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate on January 31 in connection with a money laundering case linked to alleged land fraud, after his resignation as chief minister.
In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, out of the 14 Lok Sabha seats in the state, the BJP bagged 11, AJSU Party one, JMM one and the Congress one. However, the Congress’ lone MP Geeta Kora recently shifted to the BJP.
During the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, the BJP secured victory in 12 out of the 14 seats, attaining a vote share of 40%. In contrast, the JMM managed to secure only two seats, whereas the Congress failed to win any.
